Week 3 Musts & Busts

Written by Brandon DePouw, @bdepouw09 on Twitter and @bdepoo on the Fantasy Life App

How many injuries are we going to have this year? Of course I say that we like we are actually the ones enduring them, but hey, it affects my soul. I’m on edge every snap, hoping that my first 3 draft picks don’t go down with an ACL tear. Now we also have to deal with guys getting hurt in practice and missing court, boy, fantasy football is a stressful game huh? Luckily there are other players out there that you can start without feeling completely uncomfortable about. So let’s dive once again into the players I feel strong about and the once I’d rather leave on the bench.

Quarterbacks:
Ryan Tannehill vs. Cleveland Browns – Must
Marcus Mariota vs. Oakland Raiders – Must
Derek Carr @ Tennesse Titans – Must
Andy Dalton vs. Denver Broncos – Bust
Blake Bortles vs. Baltimore Ravens – Bust
Kirk Cousins @ New York Giants – Bust

Key Must: Derek Carr

This guy must have ice in his veins because he is cool as a cucumber under pressure. The Titans are a blitz heavy team have only allowed a QB to surpass 250 passing yards once this far. Carr is 1 yard away from two straight 300 yard games and it doesn’t stop here. Get this kid now because the Raider offense is rolling.

Key Bust: Kirk Cousins
“You like that?!” No, not really. Kirk has throw for over 300 yards twice two but has thrown 3 picks already. No running game in Washington and the offense is just sloppy. The Giants defense is seemingly underrated so far this year only allowing 1 passing td and holding even Drew Brees under 300 yards. Don’t like this matchup at all for Cousins.

Running Backs:
Theo Riddick @ Green Bay Packers – Must
Lesean McCoy vs. Arizona Cardinals – Must
Ezekiel Elliott vs. Chicago Bears – Must
Christine Michael vs. San Fransisco 49ers – Bust
Ryan Mathews vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – Bust
Jeremy Hill vs. Denver Broncos – Bust

Key Must: Lesean McCoy

Even against a stout Arizona defense Lesean McCoy is still the best player on the Bills offense. He’s a play maker and need him the ball. Cardinals defense has still allowed decent yardage to backfields (over 70 yards). As involved as Lesean is in the passing game, he will return good production.

Key Bust: Christine Michael
With Thomas Rawls being injured this should be a no brainer to start a guy who’s outperformed Rawls thus far in the season. Well, the thing is this offense isn’t clicking, Wilson hasn’t been good and the 49er’s surprisingly hasn’t been terrible. Yes Fozzy Whitaker ran for 100 yards, but would he have if the Panthers offense was struggling? I suspect the San Fran defense to stuff the run and make Wilson try and get the offense going through the air.

Wide Receivers:
Amari Cooper @ Tennessee Titans – Must
Sterling Shepard vs. Washington Redskins – Must
Marvin Jones @ Green Bay Packers – Must
Stefon Diggs @ Carolina Panthers – Bust
Doug Baldwin vs. San Fransisco 49ers – Bust
Allen Robinson vs. Baltimore Ravens – Bust

Key Must: Marvin Jones
As a Golden Tate owner it pains me to say that it’s looking like Jones is the number one wide out in the Detroit offense. Luckily the Lions offense is pass heavy enough to feed multiple weapons. Sam Shields status is still unclear, but even so they allowed Stefon Diggs to go for 182 and a td. Expect a high scoring game and Jones will definitely be involved.

Key Bust: Stefon Diggs

Believe me, I can “Digg It.” Sadly, what comes up, must come down….. eventually. This feels like a trap game. Coming off a huge game against a Packer defense, Diggs goes up a much more difficult Panthers defense that can get to Bradford much quicker.  My gut feeling says that he will be held in check and the Vikings offense does not get rolling. I guess I’m saying, will the real Sam Bradford please stand up.

Tight Ends:
Dennis Pitta @ Jacksonville Jaguars – Must
Jacob Tamme @ New Orleans – Must
Gary Barnidge @ Miami Dolphins - Must
Travis Kelce vs. New York Jets – Bust
Clive Walford @ Tennessee Titans – Bust
Dwayne Allen vs. San Diego Chargers – Bust

Key Must: Gary Barnidge

It has been most ridiculous seeing people within the Fantasy Life App asking if they should drop Gary Barnidge. Look I get it, he’s been terrible, but with Coleman and Cody Kessler at the helm, this call could make me look like a genius, or a total idiot. Young quarterbacks always rely on the tight end and Barnidge may just be a streaming option at this point. I wouldn’t blink twice starting him against the Dolphins who just allowed 114 yards and a score to Martellus Bennett.

Key Bust: Travis Kelce
Kelce has been involved in the offense but has not yet had a big game. We may have to wait another week, the Jets D hasn’t allowed more than 60 yards to a tight end. It is notable that they really haven’t played a tight end weapon like Kelce. There is always upside to Kelce, but I wouldn’t expect a whole lot.
