DFS Lineup Advice: Week 5

Written by Rob Schwarz Jr., Writer and DFS Expert, @chiruxin on the Fantasy Life App and @chisportsnut25 on Twitter

How’d everyone do? Well, FLAFFL does not know this yet, but I am firing myself and stripping myself of the title, DFS Expert! Don’t get me wrong, I won money this weekend, nothing too big, but it could have been much better. I would have come ahead big if not for Cam Newton going down with the concussion. I’m not talking hundreds of thousands of dollars big, but after calculating out all of my lineups, if Newton finished with the combined stats of Derek Anderson, I would have won hundreds big. Instead, I walked away with less than $20.00 profit.

All of that said, I am back at it again. Do not ask me why though. Insanity is likely the most plausible answer. Plus, slow and steady wins the race right? At least that is what the Tortoise says. Too often we follow the path of the Hare and think we can win big money by playing in only big GPP tournaments. I mean, you only have to win one to win big, right? Well, keep buying the lottery tickets because your chances are about just as great. The key to success in this game is by playing the right amount of cash games and the right amount of tournaments. Oh, and listening to me and playing the right players of course!

Okay, enough monkey business! Alright, at least enough talk about animals. Let us get to the reason the ten of you (I am assuming ten, but there might only be five of you and that includes the family I force to open the link) are reading this article anyway.

Quarterback
Welcome back Tom Brady! Oh how the fantasy world has missed you! Now, just keep your balls in line so we do not have to go through that joke of a four game suspension again! Just let Gisele handle them from now on. Oh, and welcome to my lineup in Week 5 too!

Tom Brady - $7,500 (NE @ CLE)

Look, we can throw away all of the trends for the Patriots over the last three weeks. With Brady back, the team will perform quite differently. Brady should be on everyone’s radar and will be highly owned in cash games. I think he is worth it against a very beatable Cleveland defense.

Derek Carr - $6,800 (OAK vs. SD)
I am trading in my train pass and buying me a Carr! Not only did I just work a trade for Carr in one of my yearly leagues, I think he is a legit option in any format against the Chargers on Sunday. Rivers is also a decent play, but I love the playmakers Carr has at his disposal and Cooper has to find the end zone at some point, right?

Brian Hoyer - $5,500 (CHI @ IND)
Are we noticing a trend here? Three weeks in a row and he has been damn impressive! I like Hoyer again against a weak Colts’ defense. He will likely be without Kevin White and I do not think it matters. Alshon Jeffery has been decent and Eddie Royal has been fantastic. At this price, I will be rolling out Hoyer in some tournament action for sure!

Running Back
Whoa‼ David Johnson is not the back I suggest to use this week? How can it be? Well, it is because my lineup advice is only for the Sunday slate. It does not include the Thursday or Monday night games and the Cardinals are operating on Thursday. If it was a Sunday game you would have to bet that Johnson is a viable candidate for my top pick again.

 C.J. Anderson - $6,900 (DEN vs. ATL)

So instead of DJ, I give you C.J. for my top priced guy. Anderson has been great all year and even with a down week in Week 4, he still found the end zone. Anderson has a great matchup against the Falcons, a team allowing the sixth most points to the RB position. Give me Anderson in almost all my cash lineups.

Lamar Miller - $6,300 (HOU @ MIN)
Miller will not be highly owned when people see he is facing off against the Vikings. However, if the Vikings have any weak spot on defense, it is against the RB position. The Vikings find themselves giving up 16 points per game to the RB position and Miller has been extremely consistent all year. I think he finally finds the end zone this week and I like him paired with Anderson in cash.

Jordan Howard - $5,200 (CHI @ IND)
Howard looked great in his debut as a starter. We need to take a step back though and realize he went up a bad Lions’ run defense. Howard was an obvious play and made many of my lineups, but we should not vault him into being a RB1 just yet. All of that pessimism aside, Howard has another great matchup in Week 5 and his price is just too great not to use in any DFS format.

Wide Receiver

Odell Beckham, Jr. - $8,500 (NYG @ GB)
Have you heard? OBJ is no longer having fun playing football. Well, damn I would not be having fun either with the way the media and fantasy community are out for him. I am not a fan of OBJ other than from a fantasy stand point, but he is getting a bad reputation and I do not think it is warranted. If he had a couple touchdowns on his 2016 resume, no one would be saying a thing. Oh, and maybe if he stopped with the on the field antics, but he has always been this way. Remember the game between him and Josh Norman last year? Anyway, with everyone down on him and a great matchup, I will be targeting him with hopes his ownership levels are low.

Jordan Matthews - $6,800 (PHI @ DET)
The Eagles are coming off a Bye Week and Carson Wentz looks great thus far. Jordan Matthews has been Wentz’ go to guy so far this year and leads the team in targets. Even when he only received three targets in Week 3, Matthews found the end zone. Detroit allowed the Bears to gain 302 yards passing last week and I think Matthews benefits the most for the Eagles against that defense in Week 5.

Eddie Royal - $4,200 (CHI @ IND)
I missed on Crowder last week, but we cannot hit them all. With the news about Kevin White going to IR, Royal becomes an obvious target. Many may shy away from Royal because the Colts’ defense has not given up big points the WR position on paper. However, those numbers are deceiving. The Colts just cut Antonio Cromartie and they are also tied for the most pass interference penalties with six.

Tight End

Delanie Walker - $4,700 (TEN @ MIA)
Walker is back on my list this week. He had eight targets in his first week back from his hamstring injury and will see a favorable matchup against Miami. If I am going to spend up, Walker will likely be my guy.

Zach Miller - $3,600 (CHI @ IND)
He is here again, but this time it is less about matchup and more about opportunity. Just like with Royal, losing Kevin White means that Miller should see more targets. He is a good red zone target also and like last week can save his day with just one catch in the end zone.

Hunter Henry - $3,300 (SD @ OAK)
Here is the guy I will likely target most. I prefer spending my money at other positions and if Antonio Gates is out (which it sounds like he will be), then Henry becomes a TE1. At this price and in that high-volume offense, I love his ability to put up better than value.
